Showcase event will promote well being at work - 7 November 2007

Healthy Minds at Work is urging public, private and voluntary sector organisations across south Wales to attend a conference about improving the well being of people at work.

The conference, hosted by Swansea Council and led employment specialist Remploy, will take place on Wednesday 14 November from 10am – 4pm in the Brangwyn Hall, Swansea.

Healthy Minds at Work is a £5 million European initiative that aims to tackle stress and anxiety in workplaces across Wales.

Over the past two years the organisation, through its partnerships with over 50 companies, has been working to develop a range of new approaches to help to improve the well being of employees in Wales.

Mike Clarke, Project Director at Healthy Minds at Work, said: “We have been working with organisations across industry sectors in Wales to develop products, services and strategies that provide an integrated network of help and support for employees.

“Our goal is to help people tackle the root cause of stress-related problems, so they are able to stay in their jobs.

“This event provides an excellent opportunity for people in all kinds of organisations to come and see how such strategies work in practice.”

Swansea Council’s Stress and Counselling Services Manager Sue Hancock has been working with the initiative and is piloting some of the developed products within the local authority.

She said: “Introducing well being practices that are proven to work ensures that we are one step closer to helping our staff overcome problems that could impact on their ability to work.

“Well being amongst our staff is a highly important priority, and we are helping to ensure our colleagues have all the necessary support mechanisms should they experience stress, anxiety or depression.”

Healthy Minds at Work, is a partnership between disability employment specialist Remploy, Unison Cymru, and a range of public, private and voluntary sector organisations.

Launched in September 2005 and supported by the European Social EQUAL Fund and Remploy, the project has worked to develop strategies that help individuals to deal with stress related issues and stay in employment.

It also helps employers by enabling them to keep skilled staff and avoid substantial recruitment and training costs of replacements.
